What makes a great HobbyScool workshop
We value creativity, original thought, and teachers bringing their own perspective to their topic. Your personal knowledge, experience, and insight are the most valuable things you have to share.
01 Teach on an agreed-upon topic
In the Craft & Create Club we cover a wide range of hobbies and crafts. There's plenty of room to create something unique, but always get approval for your topic before you record.
Workshops should be created specifically for HobbyScool. Please leave out branding, calls to action, or references to other teaching platforms inside the recorded content.
02 Include a real project
Learning and creativity thrive through making something. Every workshop needs a clear, engaging project component. At a minimum, include:
- Clear instructions for what students should make during or after the class
- Guidelines for what students can upload to the project gallery, if applicable
03 Choose the right project
An accessible, relatively quick project motivates students to practice new skills and share their work. A top-notch workshop is:
- Easy to start. Students are more likely to finish a quick, manageable project. Bigger projects are welcome, but break them into stages and encourage feedback along the way.
- Relevant. The project connects directly to the class topic.
- Open enough to explore. Build a foundation of skills so students can experiment on their own instead of only following step-by-step instructions.
- Shareable. Encourage students to upload their projects and comment on each other's work.
04 Organize your content
Great instruction needs a solid structure based on a lesson plan or course outline. At a minimum:
- A clear title that reflects the content — we're happy to help you land on an engaging one
- A clear path for students to follow, plus a list of required supplies if applicable
05 Meet the audio and video standards
Good audio and video keep students focused on learning. Keep in mind:
- Audio must be clear and easy to understand, with no distracting background noise
- Audio should sync with the video footage and be clear on both channels
- Video must be high resolution (1080p), shot with a steady camera, with clear lighting and proper framing
- Film in a 16:9 aspect ratio (horizontal) for both slides and video
- Screencasts, images, and text must be sharp, not blurry or pixelated
- Narration and voiceover should be natural and clear, and not computer-generated
06 Vary your visuals
Mix up your visual formats — on-screen text, slides, example images — to emphasize key takeaways or explain complex ideas. Switching camera angles also breaks up static shots and keeps students engaged.
- Talking head shots need to be well-lit and look professional
- Slides need to be well-structured and visually appealing
- Avoid rambling, long pauses, or filler words
07 Grow your audience the right way
Teaching on HobbyScool is a great way to build your brand. Inside the workshop itself, keep the marketing light so students can stay focused on learning. Self-promotion belongs in your introduction and conclusion — for example, "Hi, I'm Andrea from ABC Quilting," or "Thanks for joining me today. You can find me at www.website.com."
The rest is handled for you: we link to your website and one social account inside the membership, we promote your workshop to our email list, and you can lead an optional community challenge for extra visibility.
Workshops don't expire when the month does
Accepted workshops stay in the Craft & Create Club library after their themed month. Members keep finding your class, and you keep getting seen.
What we're looking for, month by month
This is the general outline for our 2027 membership workshops. We reserve the right to make changes based on member requests and the ideas our expert teachers bring us. If you'd like to prepare a workshop but don't see your topic here, reach out — we're open to suggestions.
