Free for a window
The workshops are genuinely free to watch, but only during a set period, often 24 or 48 hours. If you want to keep them, there's an optional paid pass. This is how most multi-day craft events work, and it's a fair trade because the free version really is the whole workshop.
Free for your email address
You register, you get the class, and the teacher can email you afterward. Completely normal, and the only thing to check is whether you actually want to hear from them.
Free because something is being sold
A manufacturer teaching a technique that uses their tools, or a store running a session with supplies you can buy there. Often still genuinely useful, as long as you know why it exists.

How to Tell a Real Workshop from a Pitch
Three things separate a session that teaches you something from a session designed to sell you something. Check for all three before you give anyone your email.
- A named instructor. A real person with a craft they're known for, not a brand name or a generic host.
- A specific finished project. "Crochet a mini pumpkin in 30 minutes" tells you exactly what you're getting. "Unlock your creativity this fall" does not.
- A supply list. If someone is genuinely teaching you to make a thing, they know what the thing is made of and they'll tell you before you show up.
A session missing all three is usually a webinar wearing a workshop's clothes.
Where Free Online Craft Workshops Come From
Multi-day online craft events
The biggest source, and the best value for a single sitting, because you get a lot of instructors in one place. These typically run two to four days, release sessions daily, and keep each day open for a limited window. The trade is that you watch on their schedule rather than yours.
Public library systems
Genuinely underrated. Many library systems run free online classes for cardholders and give access to paid learning platforms at no cost. Check your library's events page and its digital resources page, since they're usually listed separately and the second one is the one people miss.
Local craft and quilt stores
A lot of independent shops moved their classes online and kept them there. They're often free or close to it, taught by people who have been doing that craft for decades, and small enough that you can ask questions.
Manufacturers and tool brands
Yarn companies, die cutting machine brands, paint manufacturers and sewing machine makers all run free tutorials. The instruction is usually excellent and specific to their products, which is fine as long as that's what you already use.
Long-form video on YouTube
Free, endless, and the hardest to sort. The filter that works is length and date. A 40 minute video posted in the last two years from someone with a consistent posting history is usually a real class. A four minute video is an ad for a technique, not a lesson in it.

The most common way these go wrong is that people register, mean to watch, and end up watching nothing. Three things fix it.
Pick two or three sessions, not all of them
A 26 workshop lineup is designed so there's something for everyone, not so that one person watches all 26. Read the list, pick the projects you genuinely want to end up with, and let the rest go.
Block the time before it starts
An hour on each day of the event, on your calendar, before the first email lands. A 24 hour window sounds generous and disappears fast.
Watch first, make second
You don't have to make along in real time. Watching a workshop through once and making the project on the weekend is a normal way to use these events, and it's often easier, because you already know where the tricky step is.
